Anime doesn’t magically appear out of thin air. Hundreds of people put time, effort and money into making the anime we all love. I know many of us wish to support the industry when we can but are unable to do so due to various reasons.
I am a Singaporean who absolutely loves anime. I live, breath and think about anime more than I probably should. I know many Singaporeans aside from myself are also anime fans, many on the same level as me or even more hardcore! We love to watch anime but face a major issue. It is VERY hard to find official releases in Singapore for seasonal anime. It is especially weird because ODEX has shown how successful the anime film industry can be in Singapore over the past few years but for some odd reason, official releases of anime TV series (especially simulcasts) seem to have never broken through on the mainstream!
On 11 January 2018, I saw many Singaporeans discussing the first episode of Violet Evergarden and sharing screenshots. I was confused since I knew Violet Evergarden was officially being simulcasted by NETFLIX but had not been released yet at the time of the discussions. I asked around and found that they had watched a fansubbed version of the episode on streaming sites. When asked if they knew that Violet Evergarden is being officially streamed by NETFLIX, many didn’t know!
This got me thinking that MAYBE, the reason that official simulcasts of anime TV series hasn’t broken through to the mainstream is due to information of what is available legally isn’t disseminated to most Singaporeans! Maybe, just maybe, if people are more aware of what is available legally and support them, the anime distributors in Singapore will bring more variety of anime in eventually because of the positive feedback!
So I’ve decided to do a seasonal guide for Singaporeans on where they can watch legal anime (even if there is only a few). Yes, it costs money to watch them but I hope my fellow Singaporeans can show their support for their beloved anime! Now, without further ado!
